It is a great honor to begin our “Voices of Collaboration” communication series with Mr. Răzvan Prisada, President of the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices of Romania (ANMDMR).
On March 6th, Mr. Prisada participated as a panel speaker at the EMVS Forum in Brussels — a European event dedicated to addressing the growing threat of pharmaceutical crime and highlighting how the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) stands at the core of Europe’s coordinated response.
The European Medicines Verification System – which brings together the National Medicines Verification Systems – represents an efficient and highly effective mechanism that plays a vital role in protecting public health. By enabling the verification of medicines across the supply chain, the EMVS provides a solid foundation for continuously strengthening patient safety across Europe.
The existence of this high-performance IT system at European level is essential, particularly given the significant impact that falsified medicines can have on public health and patient trust.
In Romania, OSMR has benefited from the consistent support and active involvement of ANMDMR since the early stages of implementation, seven years ago, when the foundations of the National Medicines Verification System (NMVS) were established. The role of NCAs remains essential in ensuring compliance with Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/161 and in maintaining regulatory oversight, while working in partnership with all stakeholders.
The European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) is not merely a technical infrastructure, however sophisticated, but a unique example of coordinated action across the European Union and above.
As Mr. Prisada emphasized during the Forum:
“Today, managing the system and ensuring the timely investigation of alerts requires continuous cooperation between NCAs, NMVOs, Marketing Authorisation Holders and End-Users, particularly when products circulate across multiple Member States.
Protecting patients from falsified medicines remains a shared European responsibility. The EMVS is proof that its true strength lies in its European dimension — patient safety is safeguarded collectively. This is something authorities, the pharmaceutical industry, and NMVOs across Europe can rightfully be proud of.”
Through this series, we aim to highlight the people and partnerships that make collaboration across borders possible — because protecting patients is a shared European responsibility.
